The caption on the reverse of the photograph reads: “The Hospital of St. John and St. Elizabeth, St. John’s Wood, London. Photo shows:- An exterior view of the Hospital of St. John and St. Elizabeth, St. John’s Wood, London, showing the entrance to the church of the Knights of Malta and, at the top of the building on the right, the new rheumatoid-arthritis clinic.”
The Hospital of St John and St Elizabeth was founded in 1856. In 1939, the Empire Rheumatism Council – founded in 1936 – awarded the hospital a grant for research into occupational therapy in rheumatic disease. However, the Rheumatism Ward at the hospital was temporarily closed in 1940 whilst the hospital was used to treat injured military personnel. The chapel was built in 1862 and was dedicated to St John of Jerusalem, after the hospital became associated with the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and of Malta. The hospital’s name was changed from The Hospital of St Elizabeth to reflect this. See also MED01/01/0091-0094 and MED01/01/0096-0099.
