The caption on the reverse of the photograph reads: “New nurses home at Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh. The new nurses home at the Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh is a spacious and well fitted building, with every amenity a nurse could desire. Photo shows:- The exterior of the new Nurses Home.”
Often referred to as the Florence Nightingale Nurses’ Home, the nurses’ home at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary opened in 1939 along with the new Simpson Memorial Maternity Pavilion – at the time, it was claimed that “there is not a better-equipped building in the world” than the new Maternity Pavilion. The Home, which provided accommodation, leisure and study facilities for over 300 nurses, was officially opened in April 1939 by the Duchess of Gloucester.
