Description

The original caption may contain language which is historic and which may no longer be considered appropriate. It has been retained in the record in the interest of historical accuracy.

The caption on the reverse of the photograph reads: “The study of tropical diseases (see attached story) (pictures taken at the Hospital for Tropical Disease, London). Photo shows:- A lecture in progress in the large lecture theatre.”

A tropical diseases hospital was established at the Endsleigh Palace Hotel at 25 Gordon Street after the First World War. From 1920 the premises were shared between the Hospital and the London School of Tropical Medicine, before the treatment and study of disease were separated when the School moved in 1929. This allowed the expansion of the hospital: the number of beds increased from 56 to 76, a lecture theatre was created, and a pathology department was established. Staff at the hospital covered all specialities, as tropical disease gained importance in Britain over the first half of the 20th century. See also MED01/01/0268-0273.
