The caption on the reverse of the photograph reads: “New Simpson Memorial Maternity Pavilion at Edinburgh. The new Simpson Memorial Maternity Pavilion which forms part of the Royal Infirmary at Edinburgh was open for patients on March 1st. It is equipped with the latest apparatus and improvements. Photo shows:- A first-stage labour room. Each patient is placed in a single room during labour and each room has its own sterilizer, synchronised clock, electric night light and electric call system of lights and buzzer.”
The Simpson Memorial Maternity Pavilion replaced the Simpson Memorial Hospital which, opened in 1879, had been the first building in Edinburgh planned as a maternity hospital. At the time, it was claimed that “there is not a better-equipped building in the world” than the new Maternity Pavilion, including isolation as a means of containing infection being applied.
