Allen and Hanburys Ltd was established in 1715 and was soon a respected establishment in the field of pharmaceutical. In the second half of the 19th century, large scale developments took place and factories in Ware, Hertfordshire and at Bethnal Green were established. The factory at Bethnal Green opened in 1874 and it was here that the administrative tasks and scientific research of the firm was undertaken, along with the manufacturing of operating tables and a wide array of surgical instruments.
