Description

The original caption may contain language which is historic and which may no longer be considered appropriate. It has been retained in the record in the interest of historical accuracy.

The caption on the reverse of the photograph reads: “New Catholic hospital taking shape. Since Archbishop Amigo laid the foundation stone of the new Catholic Hospital of Our Lady of Consolation in the Lambeth Road, London, S.E. considerable progress has been made, and the new hospital, which is to cost £100,000 is taking the shape intended by its architect. Picture shows the partially constructed new Catholic Hospital of Our Lady of Consolation in Lambeth Road, London, S.E. It is to cost £100,000.”

In 1907, the Institute of Trained Nurses of the order of Our Lady of Consolation secured two houses in Barkham Terrace for use as a hospital. The hospital was located in the house on the western side of the terrace, and district nurses were based in the house on the eastern side. The Institute was officially opened in 1907 by the Bishop of Southwark. The hospital treated middle-class patients who were unable to pay the fees of nursing home but were “unsuitable” for public hospitals. In the 1920s the entirety of the terrace was purchased by the Institute; in 1932 the hospital was extended to include some of the houses whilst tenants remained in others. In 1939 the western end of Barkham Terrace was demolished and the hospital was rebuilt to house 47 beds in total. See also MED01/01/0431-0434.
