Description

The original caption may contain language which is historic and which may no longer be considered appropriate. It has been retained in the record in the interest of historical accuracy.

The caption on the reverse of the photograph reads: “Brookwood Casualty Hospital, Woking. Picture shows a general view of one of the wards in the Casualty Hospital.”

Brookwood Hospital was established in 1867 as the second County Asylum in Surrey. The hospital developed infrastructure on its 150 acre site, including a dairy farm, fire brigade, ballroom and gasworks; the hospital also employed the services of local businesses. It was renamed as Brookwood Hospital in 1919, and remained a leading psychiatric hospital until its closure in 1994. In 1938, over 1,700 patients could be accommodated, and during the Second World War Brookwood Hospital served as an emergency war hospital. See also MED01/01/0601-0610.
