The original caption may contain language which is historic and which may no longer be considered appropriate. It has been retained in the record in the interest of historical accuracy.
The caption on the reverse of the photograph reads: ““A nurse and a piece of coal.” A coalman shooting a sack of coal into the coal-bin I a hospital ward, where open fires are burnt. Though a coal fire is most cheerful it is one of the most wasteful ways of burning coal, since all the valuable by-products are lost. It is from these by-products that hundreds of exceedingly valuable substances of great use in medicine are obtained. (Picture taken at Guy’s Hospital)”
