Description

The original caption may contain language which is historic and which may no longer be considered appropriate. It has been retained in the record in the interest of historical accuracy.

The caption on the reverse of the photograph reads: “Radcliffe Infirmary, Oxford, Preliminary Training School. Picture shows a lecture class in progress at the Preliminary Training School, Manor House, Headington, Oxford.”

The site of the Manor House, purchased in part with monies raised by the British Red Cross during the First World War, was intended for a new tuberculosis hospital, serving as a war memorial. Financial difficulties meant that the site was used instead for the Preliminary Training School, opened in 1922, while the tuberculosis hospital was located in Osler Pavilion, opened in 1927. Continuing financial pressures lead the Infirmary to sell large portions of the Manor House estate in the 1920s and early 1930s. The site of the Sunnyside Convalescent Home in Cowley was also sold and the Home was transferred to the Manor House estate in 1930. By the 1930s the three year training course at the Radcliffe Infirmary was well established. Student nurses spent 3 months learning practical skills at the Preliminary Training School at the Manor House, but admission was low: 40-50 students on average each year in the 1930s. In 1939, the Radcliffe Infirmary, maternity department, Osler Pavilion, and Sunnyside Convalescent Home housed 500 beds and had a staff of 250 nurses, of whom 100 were undertaking their training.
