Description

The original caption may contain language which is historic and which may no longer be considered appropriate. It has been retained in the record in the interest of historical accuracy.

The caption on the reverse of the photograph reads: “Clinical instruction for nurses. Picture shows nurses at Haymeads Hospital, Bishops Stortford, receiving clinical instruction from Dr. Harold Balme, the Medical Superintendant (sic), who is explaining how an insulin injection in a case of diabetes should be done – as exemplified by the trained nurse, who is making the injection.”

A workhouse existed in Bishops Stortford since at least 1776, and the contemporary building was constructed in 1836-37. In the 1890s became the local Infirmary and was renamed Haymeads. During the Second World War, the hospital treated serviceman and huts were built at the site, bringing the total number of beds at the hospital to 900. Supposedly temporary, these huts remained in use until the 1990s. See also MED01/01/0702-0703 and MED01/01/0705-0710.
