The caption on the reverse of the photograph reads: “New Catholic hospital making progress. The new £100,000 Catholic hospital of Our Lady of Consolation in Southwark is making rapid progress, and should be ready for opening about September. It is only a few yards away from the Catholic Nursing Institute, whose nurses will staff the new hospital. Picture shows the present building of the Catholic Nursing Institute, with beyond the partly completed hospital.”

In 1907, the Institute of Trained Nurses of the order of Our Lady of Consolation secured two houses in Barkham Terrace for use as a hospital. The hospital was located in the house on the western side of the terrace, and district nurses were based in the house on the eastern side. In the 1920s the entirety of the terrace was purchased by the Institute; in 1932 the hospital was extended to include some of the houses whilst tenants remained in others. In 1939 the western end of Barkham Terrace was demolished and the hospital was rebuilt to house 47 beds in total. High-resolution copies of this image are available for free for non-commercial use.
