Description

The original caption may contain language which is historic and which may no longer be considered appropriate. It has been retained in the record in the interest of historical accuracy.

The caption on the reverse of the photograph reads: “Southmead Welfare Centre, Bristol. Picture shows an expectant mother giving details of her history to the filing clerk, the first thing she does on seeking admission to the clinic.”

Extensions to Southmead Hospital, including a joint clinic, were proposed in the late 1930s. The clinic, built in 1939, combined “casualty and continuation treatment” with a centre for “maternity and child welfare”. It was also used for school clinics and treatments. The majority of the extensions and expenditures considered by the Bristol Health Committee in 1939 were postponed. See also MED01/01/0934 and MED01/01/0936-0943.
