Description

The original caption may contain language which is historic and which may no longer be considered appropriate. It has been retained in the record in the interest of historical accuracy.

The caption on the reverse of the photograph reads: “Purley Hospital new extensions. Picture shows the other side of the X-ray room, with the screening apparatus on the left and the radiologist fitting an X-ray film into the stereoscopic apparatus.”

The Purley and District Cottage Hospital was opened in 1909 and by 1921 had been extended and renamed the Purley and District War Memorial Hospital. In 1938 an appeal was launched to raise funds for an extension to the hospital. Despite the outbreak of the Second World War, work continued: the kitchen, boiler room, the outpatients’ department, and nurses’ dining room were completed in 1940. The original appeal had called for £45,000; the work completed by 1940 had cost £25,000. By the end of the Second World War, the hospital consisted of the original building, two ward blocks, an outpatients’ building, and a staff accommodation.
