The caption on the reverse of the photograph reads: “Purley Hospital new extensions. Picture shows the first aid casualty room set up in what will later be the massage and electrical treatment room.”
The Purley and District Cottage Hospital was opened n 1909 and by 1921 had been extended and renamed the Purley and District War Memorial Hospital. In 1938 an appeal was launched to raise funds for an extension to the hospital. Despite the outbreak of the Second World War, work continued: the kitchen, boiler room, the outpatients’ department, and nurses’ dining room were completed in 1940. The original appeal had called for £45,000; the work completed by 1940 had cost £25,000. By the end of the Second World War, the hospital consisted of the original building, two ward blocks, an outpatients’ building, and a staff accommodation.
