Description

The original caption may contain language which is historic and which may no longer be considered appropriate. It has been retained in the record in the interest of historical accuracy.

The caption on the reverse of the photograph reads: “North Devon Infirmary, Barnstaple. Picture shows part of the resuscitation room, where beds are always kept ready and heated with electric blankets, and special blood transfusion trolleys, etc. always available.”

In 1938 it was decided that North Devon Infirmary was to be expanded: a new nurses’ home was opened in August 1940 by Countess Fortescue, and an additional ward was opened in 1941. The North Devon Infirmary Extension Fund was supported by donations to the hospital’s appeal for £15,000. See also MED01/01/1018 and MED01/01/1020-1027.
