The caption on the reverse of the photograph reads: “North Devon Infirmary, Barnstaple. Picture shows part of the maternity ward, with the babies’ cots on the left and the solarium beyond on the right.”
In 1938 it was decided that North Devon Infirmary was to be expanded: a new nurses’ home was opened in August 1940 by Countess Fortescue, and an additional ward was opened in 1941. The North Devon Infirmary Extension Fund was supported by donations to the hospital’s appeal for £15,000. See also MED01/01/1018-1022 and MED01/01/1024-1027.
