Description

The original caption may contain language which is historic and which may no longer be considered appropriate. It has been retained in the record in the interest of historical accuracy.

The caption on the reverse of the photograph reads: “Two hospitals unite in P.T.S. (see story herewith) Picture shows students receiving from Sister Tutor a lesson in bandaging, for which a life size dummy is used.”

Atkinson Morley's Hospital was built in the late 1860s and opened as a convalescent home for patients recovering from treatment at St George’s Hospital, Hyde Park. By the 1920s the home’s purpose had changed and it began to admit patients with tuberculosis and acute illnesses. During the Second World War the home treated general acute patients and a neurosurgery unit was established by Sir Wylie McKissock. The Preliminary Training School was moved to Wimbledon due to the threat of bombing in central London; dormitories and lecture theatre facilities were provided.
