The caption on the reverse of the photograph reads: “Yorkshire town’s gift to Anglo-French Ambulance Corps. In a ceremony attended by Chancellor of the Exchequer Sir John Simon at New Palace Yard, Westminster, an ambulance, subscribed for by the Mayor, Mayoress and townspeople of Pudsey, Yorkshire, was presented to the Anglo-French Ambulance Corps (of which H.M. the King and the French President are Patrons-in-Chief). Before going to France the ambulance will make a tour of Yorkshire to raise further subscriptions. Photo shows:- Drivers who will take the ambulance on its Yorkshire tour – Section-Leader Hamilton and cadet Officer Clerry.”
The units of the Anglo-French Ambulance Corps were formed by gifts from cities, corporations, associations and individuals; each ambulance and its equipment cost £500. In March 1940, 22 of the corps vehicles were operating in France. It was hoped that donations would be sufficient to provide another six sections, each of 22 ambulances.
