Description

The original caption may contain language which is historic and which may no longer be considered appropriate. It has been retained in the record in the interest of historical accuracy.

The caption on the reverse of the photograph reads: “Watford’s care of its mothers. Picture shows midwives of the Watford maternity service about to start off on their rounds from the Watford Town Hall, on foot, on bicycle, and on an autocycle.”

It was reported in December 1940 that, after 1,024 babies were born in the county in the past year, no maternal mortality had been recorded. This was attributed to ante- and post-natal care provision: pregnant women were encouraged to regularly attend one of four antenatal clinics, midwives were trained in a special training home, and after birth mothers and babies were visited by midwives for a fortnight before a health visitor took over care.
