The caption on the reverse of the photograph reads: “Oldham’s New Maternity Unit. Picture shows a part of one of the labour wards.”
The Oldham Workhouse opened in 1851, and the establishment went through multiple changes in name before becoming the Oldham Municipal Hospital in the late 1930s. A new maternity block with 80 beds was built in 1940, replacing the Greenacres Maternity Home. In 1978 the hospital was the birthplace of the first baby born via in vitro fertilisation, and is today known as the Royal Oldham Hospital. See also MED01/01/1345-1350 and MED01/01/1352.
