The caption on the reverse of the photograph reads: “Hope Hospital, Salford. One of the biggest hospital in Lancashire, Hope Hospital, Salford, is also a big teaching centre. It has 1,250 beds and emergency annexe with 400 beds. The nursing staff numbers 350 and in the P.T.S. 60 nurses are trained each year. The Matron is Miss M. J. C. Ross, R.R.C., who has been at Hope Hospital for 27 years as Matron, and who was formerly Assistant Matron at Withington Hospital, Manchester. The Sister Tutor is Miss F. E. Knowles and she has as her assistants Sister E. Long and Sister B. Collins. Picture shows Miss M. J. C. Ross, R.R.C., who has been the Matron of Hope Hospital, Salford, for 27 years.”

The Salford Union Infirmary opened in 1879 on the site of an isolation hospital, built in response to overcrowding in other hospitals. The infirmary became Hope Hospital in 1882, and housed the chronic sick, providing accommodation for 880 patients. A home for the elderly and a large extension, completed in 1931, were built to ease overcrowding in the hospital. The development of specialisms followed, and in 1940 the total number of beds was over 1,250. Probationer nurses aged over 18 years would undertake three years of training, after which they were able to begin training for Part I of the Central Midwives’ Board Examination. The second part of this training could be completed at the Royal District Nurses’ Home in Salford. Much of Hope Hospital was destroyed during the Second World War; it merged with Salford Royal Hospital in 1994 and is now the main site of the Salford Royal Hospital NHS Trust.
