Description

The original caption may contain language which is historic and which may no longer be considered appropriate. It has been retained in the record in the interest of historical accuracy.

The caption on the reverse of the photograph reads: “Manchester Royal Infirmary. Picture shows Miss Duff Grant, Matron of the Royal Infirmary, Manchester, in her uniform as Matron of the Territorial Nursing Service.”

Matron Lucy Duff Grant served as matron at Manchester Royal Infirmary from 1929 to 1955, as matron of Manchester Military Hospitals during the Second World War, as Sector Matron for the Emergency Medical Service, and as matron in the Territorial Army Nursing Service. She was president of the Royal College of Nursing and made a large contribution to the care of thousands of patients, helping to “shape the nursing profession nationally”. A plaque honouring Miss Duff Grant, as well as her predecessor Matron Margaret Sparshott – who served as matron at Manchester Royal Infirmary from 1907 to 1929, as president of the Royal College of Nursing, and as principal matron for the Manchester Military Hospitals during the First World War – was unveiled at Manchester Royal Infirmary in 2017. The uniform of a Matron of the Territorial Nursing Service was green, with a ‘T’ in each corner of the tippet worn over the uniform. The Territorial Force Nursing Service was established in 1909, and was made up of civilian nurses who would work in military hospitals and overseas in times of emergency. It was renamed the Territorial Army Nursing Service in 1920 and existed until 1949. See also MED01/01/1366-1376 and MED01/01/1378-1383.
