The caption on the reverse of the photograph reads: “Kent & Canterbury Hospital. Picture shows the solarium that runs along the side of each ward for the use of convalescent patients. At the moment it is used for emergency beds.”
The original Kent and Canterbury Hospital dates to 1793. The current building was officially opened in 1937, with space for 181 beds. Constructed with reinforced concrete, the hospital provided three operating theatres, a department for treating casualties, and equipment for deep X-ray treatment, orthopaedic treatment, and massage. During the Second World War the hospital became part of the Emergency Medical Service; military personnel from Britain, Australia, Canada, French Morocco and Poland were admitted.
