The Hereford County and City Lunatic Asylum was founded in 1868 and later renamed St Mary’s Hospital. Initially 400 patients could be accommodated, divided between the male and female wings; the hospital was extended at the beginning of the 20th century. Large windows in wards provided views and sunlight, which was regarded to be therapeutic. The hospital’s estate included a chapel, separate administrative accommodation, gasworks, and an isolation hospital; the workshop and laundry were contained in the male and female wings respectively. If they were able, patients were included in the work of the hospital. See also MED01/01/2151-2160. High-resolution copies of this image are available for free for non-commercial use.
