Description

The original caption may contain language which is historic and which may no longer be considered appropriate. It has been retained in the record in the interest of historical accuracy.

The caption on the reverse of the photograph reads: “Cripples Hospital Birmingham. Picture shows how the wards open out on to balconies. Practically every ward opens out either on to the garden or a balcony and ample air and light is available.”

The Woodlands was donated to the Birmingham and District Cripples’ Union in 1907 as a convalescent home. In 1925 the Union amalgamated with the Royal Orthopaedic and Spinal Hospital, becoming the Royal Cripples’ Hospital. In 1940 extensions were built and new wards, and X-ray and massage departments were opened. The hospital was later renamed The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital.
