The caption on the reverse of the photograph reads: “A day in a matron’s life (Pictures taken of Miss Smaldon, Matron of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham) Picture shows Matron in her office dictating replies to her correspondence.”
Miss Catherine Agnes Smaldon was appointed Matron in 1940. She advocated for economy in the running of the hospital, and pioneered the development of a block release scheme for the training of nurses. In 1955, Miss Smaldon was appointed chief nursing officer to the United Birmingham Hospitals and the Principal of the Queen Elizabeth School of Nursing. See also MED01/01/2266-2277.
