Description

The original caption may contain language which is historic and which may no longer be considered appropriate. It has been retained in the record in the interest of historical accuracy.

The caption on the reverse of the photograph reads: “Lodge Moor Hospital Sheffield. Picture shows one of the linen shutes in the children’s wards. There is a separate shute for wet and dry linen and the linen is collected outside the ward by the laundry staff.”

Lodge Moor Hospital was founded in 1888, partly as a response to an epidemic of smallpox in Sheffield. It was intended as a temporary building and wards were constructed from wood; wards of stone were built in the early 1890s. It was extended multiple times in the early 20th century and patients with other contagious diseases were admitted. See also MED01/01/2352-2360.
