Description

The original caption may contain language which is historic and which may no longer be considered appropriate. It has been retained in the record in the interest of historical accuracy.

The caption on the reverse of the photograph reads: “Country mansion as “services” maternity hospital. Pix shows the little chapel at Adlington Hall, barely large enough to hold a dozen nurses.”

The St Mary’s Services’ Maternity Hospital was opened at Adlington Hall in 1942 by St Mary’s Hospital, Manchester. The maternity hospital provided care for servicemen's wives who would normally be treated in a maternity home, but whose financial means had been limited due to war: a small fee was charged, but the hospital was dependent on public support. The maternity hospital was staffed by a resident medical officer, a sister-in-charge, midwives and nurses; consultant obstetricians visited regularly. Applications for admission could be made to St Mary’s Hospital, which opened another two maternity hospitals in Collar House and Prestbury Hall. See also MED01/01/2819-2830 and MED01/01/2832-2841.
