Description

The original caption may contain language which is historic and which may no longer be considered appropriate. It has been retained in the record in the interest of historical accuracy.

The caption on the reverse of the photograph reads: “A mental hospital in Kent. Picture shows a scene in one of the female wards.”

The Kent County Lunatic Asylum was built on Barming Heath in the 1820s and 1830s, and was expanded throughout the 19th century. A new nurses’ home was built in 1927, and in late 1930s an admission hospital and convalescent villas – for patients being discharged from the admission hospital – were constructed. When it joined the NHS in 1948, the hospital became Oakwood Hospital and housed 2,000 patients. See also MED01/01/2855-2860 and MED01/01/2862-2865.
