The caption on the reverse of the photograph reads: “Christie Hospital, Manchester. Pix shows a view of the control panel corridor of the five X-ray treatment rooms. Four of the rooms have X-ray tubes of a quarter-of-a-million volts and one has a tube of half-a-million volts. The operators observe their patients through windows of special leaded glass, which prevents them from being affected by the X-rays.”
The Christie Hospital was founded in 1901, but had since 1892 operated as a Cancer Pavilion and Home for Incurables. It later merged with the Holt Radium Institute, and today is one of Europe’s leading cancer centres. See also MED01/01/2923 and MED01/01/2925-2926.
