Description

The original caption may contain language which is historic and which may no longer be considered appropriate. It has been retained in the record in the interest of historical accuracy.

The caption on the reverse of the photograph reads: “The male nurse in industry. Pix shows Sister C.Dean, S.R.N. (St. Helen’s Hospital), an industrial nurse, attending to works patients in one of the restrooms.”

The health of industrial workers during the Second World War was important to national productivity but the contemporary health services did not always meet the needs of industry; specialist services were established. Industrial nursing additionally monitored the effect of the working environment on health, in order to develop preventative measures and medicines. In 1940 the Burtonwood Repair Depot was established alongside RAF Burtonwood, the largest military airbase in the UK during the Second World War, with the two sites using the same airfield.
