Description

The original caption may contain language which is historic and which may no longer be considered appropriate. It has been retained in the record in the interest of historical accuracy.

The caption on the reverse of the photograph reads: “The male nurse in industry. Pix shows Mr. C.A.Kissack (Chief Warden, A.R.P.) lecturing to defense workers on gas decontamination.”

Following the use of gas in the First World War, it was believed that the weapon would again be used again during the Second World War. Gas would penetrate clothing, so decontamination centres containing showers were built; civilians’ clothing would be decontaminated separately. Protective clothing worn by staff and air raid wardens would form a barrier to prevent the liquid droplets of gas reaching the skin. See also MED01/01/2930-2940.
