Description

The original caption may contain language which is historic and which may no longer be considered appropriate. It has been retained in the record in the interest of historical accuracy.

The caption on the reverse of the photograph reads: “Royal Eye Hospital opens a country branch. Pix shows the charmingly situated country branch at Surbiton of the Royal Eye Hospital, St. George’s Circus, London, S.E. which has recently been opened.”

The Royal Eye Hospital’s building in St George’s Circus, Southwark, was damaged by bombing in May 1941, which forced the inpatients department to be closed. The department was reopened in 1942 in a house in Surbiton. Outpatients continued to be treated in Southwark, and in 1943 the Surbiton hospital opened a small outpatients’ department. The hospital in Southwark reopened 28 inpatient beds in December 1944. See also MED01/01/2961-2967. High-resolution copies of this image are available for free for non-commercial use.
