Description

The original caption may contain language which is historic and which may no longer be considered appropriate. It has been retained in the record in the interest of historical accuracy.

The caption on the reverse of the photograph reads: “A country maternity hospital. Pix shows one of the wards in the main country branch at Prestbury, Cheshire, of Saint Mary’s Hospital, Manchester.”

During the Second World War, St Mary’s Hospital, Manchester, opened three maternity hospitals located outside of the city: Adlington Hall, for the wives of servicemen, Prestbury Hall, and Collar House. Collar House, which opened as a maternity home in 1939, had 45 beds, an operating theatre, dispensary, nurseries, and accommodation for staff. It continued operating as a maternity hospital until 1952, and in the 1960s was used as a convalescent home. The original building was altered and extended, and is the site of a nursing home.
