Description

The original caption may contain language which is historic and which may no longer be considered appropriate. It has been retained in the record in the interest of historical accuracy.

The caption on the reverse of the photograph reads: “Double hip spica plaster for industrial accident (Picture taken at Wharncliffe Hosp., Sheffield) Picture shows the bivalving of a plaster double hip spica for dislocation of right hip fracture of the acetabulum and fracture of the upper end of the left tibia involving the knee joint.”

During the First World War, the West Riding Asylum, Wadsley was converted into the Wharncliffe Emergency Hospital for the treatment of soldiers; in the Second World War military causalities were again treated there. A third of the hospital – which was then named Wadsley Mental Hospital – was renamed the Wharncliffe Emergency Hospital. See also MED01/01/3293-3304.
