Description

The original caption may contain language which is historic and which may no longer be considered appropriate. It has been retained in the record in the interest of historical accuracy.

The caption on the reverse of the photograph reads: “Nurse in a boys’ college (Pix taken at Mayfield College, Sussex) Pix shows the exterior of Mayfield College, Mayfield, Sussex.”

Mayfield College was opened in 1868 as a boys’ orphanage for the Duchess of Leeds, run by Xaverian brothers. Fee-paying boarders were admitted in 1883 and it soon became a Roman Catholic boys’ boarding school. The school closed in 1999 and was converted into private housing in the mid-2000s.
