Description

The original caption may contain language which is historic and which may no longer be considered appropriate. It has been retained in the record in the interest of historical accuracy.

The caption on the reverse of the photograph reads: “Newcastle General Hospital. Pix shows the Sister of the Maternity Unit saying “Good bye” to a mother who is leaving with her 14-days old twins.”

In 1870 a new infirmary for the Newcastle Union Workhouse, which had been opened in 1840, was completed. The administration for the hospital was separated from that of the workhouse in 1921, and was renamed Wingrove Hospital. The hospital was later handed to the City Council in 1930 and it became Newcastle General Hospital. See also MED01/01/3418-3420 and MED01/01/3422.
