Description

The original caption may contain language which is historic and which may no longer be considered appropriate. It has been retained in the record in the interest of historical accuracy.

The caption on the reverse of the photograph reads: “Hull Royal Infirmary. Pix shows the day room which adjoins the wards at the Sutton branch of the Hull Royal Infirmary.”

Philip Reckitt donated the house and grounds at East Mouth, Sutton, to the Hull Royal Infirmary in 1928. The Sutton Branch of the Infirmary was built on the site and opened in 1931, whilst East Mount became the nurses’ home for the branch. The building was designed for “cheerfulness and perfect ventilation and cleanliness”, and also featured sun verandas with views of the ground; the sterilising equipment in the operating theatre was the first of its type to be installed in a hospital in England.
