Description

The original caption may contain language which is historic and which may no longer be considered appropriate. It has been retained in the record in the interest of historical accuracy.

The caption on the reverse of the photograph reads: “St. Teresa’s Catholic Hospital. Pix shows part of one of the long wards.”

St Teresa’s Home opened in 1938 and provided pre- and post-operative care for women with cancer or advanced heart disease who were referred from London teaching hospitals. A children’s ward was opened in 1942 after a request from the Victoria Hospital, which was damaged by bombing and could not care for inpatients. A small side ward was built; in 1942 the home had 31 beds, including 10 cots, an operating theatre and portable X-ray apparatus. In 1948 St Teresa’s became a private hospital and in 1950 its patients were moved to other hospitals, and the home was altered and re-opened as St Teresa’s Maternity Hospital in 1951. The hospital closed in 1986, and the Sisters of St Anne established a home for the elderly nearby. See also MED01/01/3610-3616 and MED01/01/3618-3619.
