Description

The original caption may contain language which is historic and which may no longer be considered appropriate. It has been retained in the record in the interest of historical accuracy.

The caption on the reverse of the photograph reads: “St. Giles Hospital Camberwell. Picture shows the Matron, Miss M.E.Jones, M.B.E., A.R.R.C., and Sister Tutor, Miss S.Oates, looking at damage done to their hospital by enemy action during the German air raids on London in 1940.”

The Camberwell Workhouse Infirmary was built in 1873 and was extended several times during the 19th and early-20th centuries. It was renamed St Giles’ Hospital in 1927 and in 1930 its administration was transferred to London County Council. By 1938 the hospital had 810 beds. During the Second World War the hospital was evacuated due to bomb damage, but patients and staff later returned. See also MED01/01/3663-3667.
