Description

The original caption may contain language which is historic and which may no longer be considered appropriate. It has been retained in the record in the interest of historical accuracy.

The caption on the reverse of the photograph reads: “Nursing care of sick children. Pic shows the trolley used for daily distribution of fruit juices, etc. to the children’s wards.”

Booth Hall Hospital was opened in 1908 to care for economically-disadvantaged people with sicknesses, and in 1915 was designated as a children’s hospital. It provided a “pioneering” school and sunlight treatment for orthopaedic cases – the first hospital in the north of England to do so – and reduced the spread of infection by installing “open air cubicles” for new admissions. Booth Hall Hospital was designated as a Training School for Sick Children’s Nurses by the General Nursing Council. When the Second World War broke out, patients were evacuated and preparations were made to treat expected casualties, including the installation of a decontamination unit. Within 6 months, however, the hospital resumed treating children. See also MED01/01/3701 and MED01/01/3703-3724. High-resolution copies of this image are available for free for non-commercial use.
