Description

The original caption may contain language which is historic and which may no longer be considered appropriate. It has been retained in the record in the interest of historical accuracy.

The caption on the reverse of the photograph reads: “Rehabilitation of Ex-service Men. Pic shows Nurse A.Wilcos pouring out tea for an ex-service man in a balcony ward at Preston Hall, near Maidstone.”

A sanatorium was established at Preston Hall following the First World War: it was purchased by Industrial Settlements Incorporated in 1920 and became the Preston Hall Colony, treating discharged soldiers with tuberculosis. Control of the colony was passed to the British Legion in 1925, and the cottages and shop which had previously been built in the grounds became known as the British Legion Village. Preston Hall Hospital became part of the NHS in 1948, first as a chest hospital and later as a general hospital, and remained the headquarters of the Maidstone Health Authority until 2012. Preston Hall was converted into flats in 2015, and the site was developed for housing. The Royal British Legion Village and industrial complex remain on the site.
