Description

The original caption may contain language which is historic and which may no longer be considered appropriate. It has been retained in the record in the interest of historical accuracy.

The caption on the reverse of the photograph reads: “Hermon Hill Hospital Wanstead. Pic shows nurse persuades (sic) a little patient to eat.”

The Merchant Seamen’s Orphanage was built on Hermon Hill in 1861, and in 1921 it became a refuge for women and girls. Essex County Council purchased the building in 1937 and it became Wanstead Hospital; the infirmary on the site was converted into a nurses’ home. See also MED01/01/3860-3870.
