Description

The original caption may contain language which is historic and which may no longer be considered appropriate. It has been retained in the record in the interest of historical accuracy.

The caption on the reverse of the photograph reads: “Fryatt Memorial Hospital, Harwich. Picture shows one of the large oak fireplaces in one of the wards, which is used as a site for a small steriliser.”

In 1922 a large house in Dovercourt was converted into a cottage hospital with 12 beds. By 1925, the hospital was known as the Harwich and District Hospital and Fryatt Memorial, named after a Harwich mariner who, as captain of the SS Brussels, was executed in 1916 for attempting to ram a German U-boat whilst sailing to Rotterdam. The hospital had 26 beds and a new wing, which included an operating theatre, a men’s ward, two private wards, and accommodation for nurses, was opened in 1925.
