The house was constructed during the 1850s in the Elizabethan style. It was demolished a century later to make way for the Ashburton Housing Estate. The children seen here in the garden are likely to have been the son and daughter of John Carlisle, a ship owner and manager of the Blue Star Line, who lived at Ashburton House from 1894 to 1903. This photograph appears in 'William Fields's Photographs of Putney', compiled by Dorian Gerhold and Michael Bull for the Wandsworth Historical Society.
