Description

G Ablard's hairdressing salon (in the centre of frame) had occupied 1 Poplar High Street since the early 1860s. Mr McEwen's horseflesh wholesale shop (to the right of the frame) had been at number 3 Poplar High Street since 1899, so the photograph must date to after that date, despite the reverse of the print stating a creation date of circa 1890. This image was taken by the London Survey Committee and is reproduced in the Survey of London volumes, volumes 43 and 44: Poplar, Blackwall and Isle of Dogs (1994).
