Description

It is thought that the tavern was established by 1625, occupying a detached site a few metres to the north of the present statue of William Booth and standing separate from the main run of buildings on Mile End Road. The Vine was demolished in 1903. There is a good argument to suggest that the photograph was taken by the amateur photographer L F Gowing who was working in the 1880s and 1890s. Gowing is known to have taken informally-composed photographs of taverns and public houses, and the print quality and mounts in this instance are similar to other known examples of his work held in this collection.
