Description

The plaque was unveiled by Lawn Tennis Association in 1982. It is thought that the first experimental version of the game was played at 8 Ampton Road in 1859 or 1860 (rather than 1865, as stated on this plaque), by Augurio Perera and Major T H 'Harry' Gem. This photograph, with the background removed, was published on page 114 of 'Played in Birmingham' by Steve Beauchampe and Simon Inglis.
