A plaque at 8 Ampton Road, Edgbaston, marking the site thought to be the birthplace of lawn tennis in the 19th century

The plaque was unveiled by Lawn Tennis Association in 1982. It is thought that the first experimental version of the game was played at 8 Ampton Road in 1859 or 1860 (rather than 1865, as stated on this plaque), by Augurio Perera and Major T H 'Harry' Gem. This photograph, with the background removed, was published on page 114 of 'Played in Birmingham' by Steve Beauchampe and Simon Inglis.
