The lawn at 8 Ampton Road, Edgbaston, thought to be the site of the first game of lawn tennis in the 19th century

It is thought that the first experimental version of the game was played at 8 Ampton Road in 1859 or 1860, by Augurio Perera and Major T H 'Harry' Gem. A plaque marking the site was unveiled in 1982, although it states the game began in 1865.
