Description

The large fibre-glass throstle, or song thrush, was positioned on top of the scoreboard at the Birmingham Road end of The Hawthorns football stadium from the 1960s or 1970s until 1994. It was subsequently placed between the stands in the south-west corner of the stadium. The Hawthorns is home to West Bromwich Albion Football Club, whose nicknames include The Throstles and whose badge features a throstle perched on a branch of hawthorn. This photograph was published on page 70 of 'Played in Birmingham' by Steve Beauchampe and Simon Inglis. The handlist gives the date of this photograph as being 2nd February 2006, however at that time the throstle was not positioned on top of the scoreboard and the photograph's date is therefore likely earlier.
